Muddy boots forward, restoring our greenspaces.

Urban forests are essential to the quality of our air and water, as well as providing free recreation areas for the community.

Our environmental restoration and development efforts at the Elm Fork of the Trinity River and surrounding forest includes rejuvenation of 11 acres of wetlands in Hines Park, once a neglected and litter-filled greenspace. And thanks to compassionate corporate sponsors, and volunteers who embrace muddy boots, we've revitalized the 110-acre Frasier Dam Recreation Area in northwest Dallas.

But we won’t stop there! For the next 3 years, GSD is focused on redeveloping and renewing L.B. Houston Nature Trails, an almost 300-acre conservancy park established in 1962. GSD is redesigning the park into a multi-recreational and accessible greenspace.

How we’re restoring and developing the Trinity…

Volunteers from Anheuser Busch help cleanup the Frasier Dam Recreation Area

Development of the Trinity River area includes:

  • Establishing picnic areas with flood resistant benches and tables.

  • Constructing raised tread surfaces.

  • Building kiosks and viewing decks.

  • Installing an “all-abilities” dock launch.

  • Creating a butterfly garden and bee hotel.

  • Growing pocket prairies.

Volunteers from Greenspace Dallas construct a raised tread surface.

Restoration of the Trinity River area involves:

  • Eradicating acres of invasive species.

  • Removing tons of trash, litter, and debris from the forest and river.

  • Using Litter Booms to prevent debris from floating downstream.

  • Raising the tree canopy.

  • Recovering or rerouting existing trails.

And here’s where we’re making a direct impact.

Hines Park

When we adopted this long-forgotten city park, the grounds and lake were inundated with trash. After years of clean-ups, the park is now one of the most beautiful natural areas in the city. We added a rock garden to mitigate erosion and planted native flora in the park. We also added a loop trail around the lake, an observation deck, an amphitheater, a raised tread surface, and four benches situated in beautifully forested areas – allowing for views of the lake, birds, and other wildlife.

The park is being redesigned into a multi-recreational green space for bicycle riders, walkers, hikers, joggers, bird watchers, fishermen, canoers, and kayakers. Once litter, debris and invasive plants are removed, Greenspace Dallas will create new and safer multi-use trails, picnic areas, riverside viewing overlooks, and a deck with a dock that overlooks the beautiful L. B. Houston Lake. This park is being redesigned in 3 phases over next 3 years, with the first phase, the restoration of 105 acres of unusable park land, having recently been completed.

Since 2013, Greenspace Dallas joined many committed partners in the reclamation and development of this beautiful urban forest – located in the heart of DFW! To date we have banded together to have remove over 1 million pounds of debris and trash from the area. Our partners include amazing volunteers, generous donors, multiple corporations, the City of Dallas, Dallas Water Utilities, Dallas County, the EPA and many more.
